Personal Guides of Udaipur
Author: SamAfter two sybaritic nights at Oberoi just outside Jaipur and a night in Jaipur proper, we cancelled our flight to Udaipur so we can drive there. We contacted our travel agent to arrange different resevation days at one of the Udaipur five star hotels with which we are booked. We first drove to Pushkar. Pushkar is small, so it was easy to explore in a car and had some fantastic shopping. We loved the bargaining part with all the various vendors, that was totally fun. But, we decided we needed our own personal guide and we managed to find the perfect driver, escort and interpreter. He was our dream come true for all of the rest of our travels.
We got caught up in a wedding parade and were coverd with sweet smelling leys byt the groom’s brother. It was night time and suddenly, all the lights go out in Pushkar. Our wonderful interpreter pushed us into a shop. We asked what was going on and he saved us from walking into exploding firecrackers. Apparently, something that happens after a wedding parade. We were starving, so he found us a fabulous pizza joint, funny that, a pizza and not India food. Our interpreter really did know us better than we knew ourselves, we didn’t realize we were craving different food other than Indian fare with which we’ve only had since we’ve been hear.
The next morning, our personal guided had us visit a holy tank and we got blessed. Then he saved me again, I almost walked into a cow. My husband was treated to the best barbar shop ever. He said he had never had a better shave and hair cut. I have to agree, his hair cut looks smashing. Our personal guide could go all the way to Udaipur with us and he even offered to guide us around there also. We couldn’t resist, he was so marvelous and we got spoiled by him in the few days we knew him. He was an extra expense we thought was well worht breaking our budget for. We decided that from now on we will only travel by car hire and with our own personal guide.
